Fine Art

Paintings and Monoprints
Everything one designs and paints or draws, teaches something about one’s future projects, no matter what the medium. In the last four years I've returned to an old favorite, painting, in addition to fiber work, because I missed it so much. I had taken a thirty-year side trip in the fabric world, mostly painting on silk, making wall hangings and hand-painted wearables. I love to paint, with anything, but missed the challenge of applying all the fine art design principles to the controlled degree necessary when composing the rectangle. A scarf, for example, loses its overall composition when tied. It’s more about color and pattern.

I’m enjoying the challenges of painting en plein air and also love painting in the studio, usually from photos I’ve taken of places that speak to me. Not everything is a landscape: I like to set up still lifes too. I use oils, acrylics, pastels, and sometimes monoprint to express the ideas.
